For many travel quotes, or quotes in general are a source of inspirational. It is as if it gives them some kind of meaning or a magical spark that turns their life around. For us, however, they are simply annoying. Quotes are overly optimistic, irrelevant for us in so many ways and over simplify the reality of things. We wondered if there are others who think the same way as us so we embarked on a journey to get opinions from other travel bloggers.
Here’s what they really think of travel quotes.
“The world is a book and those who do not travel read only a page”
Travel is not for everyone. We all have different roles in this life. What’s important is knowing what your purpose is in life and doing what you truly love. Oftentimes, this quote can give people a misleading image of a glamorous lifestyle of travel. And that if you don’t travel, you are not good enough or you are not doing what you are supposed to do.
For example, you can be a public school teacher – teaching kids how to read and write. This is already an amazing role in this world. You are not just one page of the book. You are the book.
“Travel leaves you speechless and then turns you into a storyteller”
This one always ruffles my feathers. I can’t quite put my finger on it but there’s something about it that grates on me. I think it’s just too dramatic. As if every trip you take is going to be legendary filled with awestruck moments of wonder when really most people come home from a trip with a quick “It was fun!” recount. No matter how much some people travel, it’s not always going to turn them into eloquent storytellers.
If it scares you, it might be a good thing to try.
Though we are fans of travel quotes and are guilty of being pseudo-inspired by a few cliched ones as well, not all travel quotes are good. Some like the one we mentioned are downright dangerous. There are a lot of dangers associated with travelling in a foreign destination/country and its always better to do your homework as to whats a good way to get immersed in the local culture and what’s not. Getting robbed at knife point or mugged because you braved the night to go wandering in a narrow alleyway is probably not a good thing to try. Though you may live to tell the tale and it might make for a great story once you’re back unscathed, its also immensely risky. Though people might argue that its helpful for people hesitating to go out and travel because they’re scared, or maybe scared of stepping out of their comfort zones to try a new experience, generic statements like these often do more harm than good. Safe to say, this quote does not make it to our list of travel quotes to share.
“I haven’t been everywhere but it’s on my list”
Juliette thinks this is the most cliche, over-used quote especially by new travel bloggers.
Quit your job. Buy a ticket. Get a tan. Fall in love. Never return.
This is suited for people who hold a very strong passport and earn in Euros or dollars says Sonali.
We definitely agree with her on this one. People who encourage this obviously don’t understand that not everyone can do that. No matter what you think, travel is a privilege and not a necessity.
Do you honestly think that a Pakistani like me can travel wherever I please? Some nationalities undergo so much scrutiny when we travel, it is just not possible.
Quit your job? Even if we all wanted to, not everyone can or should.
Buy a ticket and never return? Umm, without a job? Also, going back to nationality scrutiny, we have to show and prove a return ticket.
So no, this travel quote is irrelevant to most of us.
Life begins at the end of your comfort zone
It could be weird, but I think that this quote is absolutely right. The emotions and memories that we can experience when leaving our comfort zone are invaluable and will last forever. At the same time, you can see this sentence used everywhere and on every occasion. Even worse, those that use this quote the most are those who will never leave their comfort zone.
