Living in Bangkok all our life, we’ve come to realize we haven’t really explored much of Thailand. I mean seriously, it seems that tourists and travelers get to see more of the country in a few months than we have in a year. Maybe we had been complacent or knew that time wasn’t going anywhere. But the more we saw our friends and travel bloggers talk about their favorite Thailand destinations and awesome trips they were taking, the more we wanted to as well.
It goes back to the reason why we started Dose of Life – to kind of kick us in the butt to go out and explore more. And explore we have. In the past 12 months, we have definitely seen and experienced a lot.
Since we’re on the subject, we’re taking this opportunity to countdown (in no particular order) our favorite destinations in Thailand that we visited so far.
Prachuap Khiri Khan
Prachuap Khiri Khan is a beautiful coastal province in the Central-Southern part of Thailand, which is growing in popularity.
Known for: beautiful beaches, coastal drives/bike riding, national parks and low mountains
Must see places: Kui Buri national park // Phraya Nakhon Cave // Ao Manao Beach // Khao Lum Muak // Koh Talu
For more details, read about our 4-day trip here.

Chanthaburi
Directly opposite from Prachuap Khiri Khan across the Gulf of Thailand, to the Eastern side of Thailand lies another coastal province known for its charming character.
Known for: national parks, beautiful coastal drives, mangrove forests, local beaches, gem trade and seafood
Must see places: Khun Krabaen mangrove trail // Chanthaboon old town // Namtok Phlio National Park // The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception // Noen Nang Phaya viewpoint
More on Chanthaburi, read through our 3-day trip and scenic drives
Chonburi
Most people think of going to Pattaya as it is one of the closest beach area from Bangkok. Now Pattaya is part of Chonburi province but if you look at the capital (also called Chonburi city), it’s actually even closer from Bangkok and exudes a more relaxed, pleaseant and local ambiance.
Pattaya is clearly the loud and obnoxious sister of Chonburi city, which is why we really loved visiting the latter.
Known for: local beaches, temples, and seafood
Must see places: Snow mountain // Grand Canyon of Chonburi // Wang Saen Suk Hell Garden

Doi Ang Khang, Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai is awesome but did you know there is more to it than just the main city area. We drove up further north up in the mountains, close to the border with Burma to a place called Doi Ang Khang. It is a beautiful mountaneous region where the temperatures can drop as close to 0 °C degrees in winter.
Our trip here was spontaneous and we opted this place over Pai. There are a lot less foreigners here but plenty of Thai tourists and locals living here. One of our best and top places to visit in Thailand by far.
Known for: camping, beautiful views, serene landscape and temperate climate fruits, flowers, and vegetables
Must see places: Royal Agricultural Station // Mu Ban Khum village // Kiu Lom Viewpoint //
We have a few others that make the list but they are quite well known already so we won’t be mentioning them in detail. Other favorite Thai destiantions are:
Koh Nang Yuan
Ayutthaya
And there you have it folks, are ulimate list of favorite Thailand destinations we visited this past year as part of our efforts to rediscover the country.

Beautiful photos! I haven’t made it to Thailand yet but it is definitely on my list! They all look like wonderful places to visit, and you’re right – its great to explore your ‘own back yard’ too!!
Beautiful pictures! I love Thailand but I haven’t ever met anyone who doesn’t love it!
Lovely pictures. You have captured the beauty of Thailand in all its vibrant colours well. Not only the natural beauty comes alive but the history and culture of the country is also frozen in your frames.
Thank you Vyjay for the lovely sentiments. You’re absolutey right!
You’ve got some gorgeous photos here! Thailand is such a stunning country. We’re hoping to get there next year (first time!) so will be checking out all the rest of the trips 🙂
Some really beautiful pics here. I particularly like the one of the young monks at Prachuap Khiri Khan. Koh Nang Yuan looks wonderful too. Such a beautiful country.
Ahhh, isn’t Instagram wonderful. There are some great spots I’ve never even heard of, even though I’ve been to Thailand many times.Koh Nang Yuan looks beautiful.
Yes, its usually the same places for people – Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Krabi. Most they will do is Kanchanaburi, Ayutthaya and Khao Yai. There are so many others though.
Back to my favorite PROcrastination tool, instagram!
Chonburi sounds like the place for me as snow mountain seems to be my kind of place. Hope one day I`ll get there and document it all on my instagram… one day!
Keep having fun!
Look for some cool deals from Thaiairways and get over here!
This is amazing!! I always got to hear/ read about the typical tourist haunts in Thailand and your post just shows how there are many more incredible destinations in the country!! Koh Nang Yuan looks like out of the world. Thanks for sharing all these gorgeous pics.
Yes Koh Nang Yuan is incredible but sadly becoming too touristy as well. What you don’t see there is dozens of people cramming behind me waiting to take their photo. ughhh, tip: always go really early. I’m sure you know that.
Everyone is like that, aren’t they? When it’s your own state or country, you don’t see enough but in another country, you shoot for the stars to see it all. Thailand is definitely beautiful with a TON to see. I need to go back!
Lovely pictures and I totally agree with you on the first point. You kind of always “Take it easy” when you are living in a country and always think you will see more of it “later”. As travelers to that country, they would like to see maximum in a short time, and hence they always see/explore more. I barely did much travels living in Indonesia for an year but when I went just to “visit”, I saw SO much more!
So glad you agree and you’re right as well Jo. I believe you’re coming to Thailand again since you won that contest. Say hi to us if you have time.
Chantaburi and Chiang Mai for me. Lovely collection of pictures. Definitely induces a wanderlust in people. Hopefully I will be able to make it here.
Great shots! And I totally agree with you about being a tourist in your own city/country. We always seem to want to experience new things when great experiences are waiting for us in our own place! Great job for exploring your stomping ground. You’ve inspired me to do the same where I live (Seattle). Cheers!
Those are beautiful places! Husband and I will plan to go see some of these places
Wow you’ve been to so many places in Thailand. They are really beautiful places, which you’ve captured so well.
Great list of locations. I’m heading to Chang Mai and will definitely give Doi Ang Khan a visit. Been to Ayutthaya a few days ago and it is an amazing place to see some old ruins. http://www.196pebbles.com/ayutthaya/
Best of luck and safe travels on your visit! Doi Ang Khang is great! Ayutthaya is gorgeous too. Went last year.
