Let’s face it, Bangkok is great and there is so much to explore in this bustling city but the heat can really get you!
Seriously, after 20 minutes out on the streets, we’re usually sweating as if we ran a marathon. But don’t let that stop you from venturing out and exploring Bangkok to the fullest. To help you along the way, there are redemptions for your efforts in the form of liquids.
You’ll quickly notice how convenient everything is – from shopping to convenient stores at every corner to food stalls to even amazing drink stalls. Although the 7/11’s are great, they are nothing compared to the local drink stalls spread across the streets of Bangkok.
Here’s a lowdown on our top stalls that you should also give a try.
Coconut water
Coconut water is an amazingly refreshing drink and contain a lot of energy to superpower your adventures throughout the day. You’ll notice carts with young coconuts on ice. You can ask them to give you coconut water in the coconut itself or in a plastic cup.
A bonus: you also get to eat the coconut meat. Yum, bring on the calories!
Fruit drinks
Pomegranate, lemon, orange and other seasonal fresh fruit drinks can be found all over the streets. They range between 20 – 40 Baht depending on the bottle size and are very refreshing on a hot day. We particular like the lemon juice – perfect mix of sweet and sour.
Coffee and Tea stands
Pass on the overly expensive Starbucks coffee and give the local vendors a try. Sure they don’t come in a nice cup or glass but they taste just as good.
Pro tip: Thailand is known to put a lot of sugar in their fruit drinks, coffee and tea (sometimes even food) so always remember to tell them your sweetness level. You can say “nam tan nit noi” (little sugar) or “mai sai nam tan” (no sugar). They also put a lot of cream, milk and condensed milk so it’s best to wave your hand if you don’t want them to add those extras.
Slushie stand
Here you don’t really have a say in the sugar level because it is premade and we’ve never really tried one for ourselves but it looked kind of cool. These vendors sell different iced slushies including fruit, coffee, coconut and other interesting flavors that will surely cool you off. Plus you get a little jello-bubbly surprise at the bottom of the glass – a must try when in Bangkok.
So there you have it. Did your wanderlust to explore the streets of Bangkok increase? What other awesome drinks have you come across that we didn’t mention here? We’d love to know.
Coconut water is my go-to for refreshments! Growing up in the Philippines, my Mom had to stop me from drinking coconut juice in the morning because apparently it’s not very good to drink it with an empty stomach? Not sure if it’s true but as soon as I’ve eaten my breakfast, it’s coconut water for me the whole day. :p
Coconut water is amazingly refreshing but yes, doubt you should drink anything on an empty stomach…unless specified. I might be wrong.
