Did you know that Kanika is a huge paranormal enthusiast? Well, she is. In fact, she wishes it was her day and night job. So when we were in Koh Chang, she researched if there were any haunted or weird things to see on the island. A quick search led us to a couple of posts about a ghost ship in Koh Chang.
Intriguing! We decided to check it out.
Getting to the ghost ship
As we had driven our way to Koh Chang, we quickly got in our car and made our way. It is located at the south-western tip of the island. All we had to do was follow the road all the way to the end, past Bang Bao towards Bang Bai Beach. On Google Maps, it is named The Galaxy Bang Bai Beach. The is or was the name of the ghost ship.
As we neared our destination, we came across a guard post and a barrier. Outside, it was written:
“visitors pay 100 per person”
So wait, what? Are there non-visitors here too? Can you stay here? We were a bit perplexed but our curiosity grew. We paid the entrance fee and continued driving. Inside, we were met with several elephant statues around the area.
A bit weird but OK. It looked deserted, which we expected but at the same time, it was all well kept. THAT we didn’t expect. We thought we would probably have to hike through some forest area or pass a “Do Not Enter” sign.
As we drove in the property, we kept your eyes peeled for the ghost ship. It wasn’t long before we caught a glimpse of it in the distance. Our hearts were racing with excitement and maybe a bit of anxiety.
Is it really a ghost ship? Is it even abandoned?
Now, are there actual ghosts in this hotel? We don’t know. We did some research and no one has ever seen one or mentioned anything of the sort. It’s also not possible to find out since the hotel is off-limits as a sign says “Do not Enter. Renovating.”
It’s also quite evident that it is indeed not a ghost ship of any sort. It is unclear if it is even abandoned because of the sign. If there are any renovations being done, we didn’t see any activity.
Still, it was worth seeing what all the fuss was about. I was actually glad that this was it and that there wasn’t any real paranormal threat around it. I might feel differently at night but people do stay around the property.
Yes, there are accommodations nearby
Just in front of the “ghost ship”, you will find a rickety wooden house. That is the reception for the resort property – Koh Chang Grand Lagoona. Starting about $80/night you can stay in cottages and bungalows around the area. You will find a lake in the middle and a beautiful beach in front.
There is even a swimming pool shaped like a pseudo boat. Quite an interesting concept. The whole place is actually quite pretty! Very calming, making it quite a treat to explore and take photos. Again, not sure how I would feel about it at night. I reckon it would be equally eerie.
Is it worth going?
Paranormal or not, this is an interesting site to see if you’re in Koh Chang. We think it is definitely worth visiting. The area is beautiful, the beach is nice, and you will see some interesting boat chalets/bungalows. Some you can stay in or dine at, while others you can’t because they are renovating. Supposedly.
Of course, the ghost ship itself is an amazing attraction, even if you can’t go inside. We really enjoyed exploring this place. In fact, wish we stayed longer and took more photos and went inside one of those run-down boat chalets.
Would you go? Have you been? Let us about your experience in the comments below.
That’s very cool. Will have to check it out whenever I go.
Cool bro! Maybe you can stay there for a night?
That´s a crazy trip! And totally my type of activity. I would love to visit this site, as I´m so into weird and unusual things like that! Thanks for sharing that! I didn´t know about it before!
Oh you and Kanika would get along so well. If you ever visit Koh Chang or anywhere in Thailand, let us know. We can direct you to spooky unusual stuff.
Your post title kept me intrigued. I read the article till the end hoping I would find something spooky experience but it wasn’t. Was Kanika disappointed that she didn’t witness any paranormal activity there?
Sorry about that Nitin. We did admit it was kind of a clickbait. We fell for it too but who knows maybe if we stayed a night or two we would experience something spooky. Kanika was totally disappointed.
I have to say that I am not one that believes in ghosts and things like that but this is definitely an interesting concept! The area looks beautiful and worth visiting alone for the scenery!
How com you don’t believe in ghosts and things like that? I’ve heard enough stories to believe it is true…I’ve never seen one myself but my wife experienced a haunting once in Singapore.
This is so interesting and quirky! Would love to see it one day.
I haven’t been here before and like you say, ghost ship or not the place is beautiful. I would love to go one day.
I visited here with my son the other day. Couldn’t get on The Galaxy but got on one of the smaller deserted boats.
The whole place was eerie. Spooked us out.
Anyone know the story of why / what happened here ?
We were too cautious about getting on the smaller boats too. It was eerie but awesome! Wouldn’t want to be there at night though.
What we know is that the owner ran out of money or was prisoned or something like that and the project didn’t have money. Now they are using whatever is there to make money. Not sure how well they do, to be honest.
Been inside smaller boats. Abandoned rooms but still with bed, airco and tv.
oooh. Any, in particular, you can share? And where?
We are actually sitting about 100m from the “ghostship” on the beach. We read your blog to try and find out why this beautiful place is so deserted?
We are happy to find a quiet beach away from the crowds. 😉
wow that is so cool! It’s got a cool, mysterious vibe, doesn’t it? I wonder if you’re staying there till late.
So what did you think o the story behind it? Have fun on the rest of your Koh Chang trip guys.
