It’s been a while since we’ve done a food review. We have tried plenty of new dishes on our recent trip but while attending the Krabi Naga Fest, I couldn’t help notice how good the food was wherever we went. So here are some of the best dishes we were eating in Krabi.

Curries

When it comes to curries, Thais do it really well. The southern region, however, definitely kick it up a notch. Tangy, spicy and delicious.

The very first dish we tried during our trip to Krabi was this beef green curry. Dare I say it was one of the best green curries I’ve ever had!? We ate this at Baan Ma Yhing, a restaurant in KhlongPhrasong, Koh Klang.

Another curry (or more like a soup) we had at Baan Ma Yhing was the Kaeng som a – southern spicy soup with fish and bamboo shoots. Oh man, it had one heck of a kick. It made us all cough and wheeze for breath at the first sip. But oh so flavorful.

Another coup/curry we tried was this one with crab meat and wild betel leaf bush. Eaten with rice, by itself or most preferably with rice vermicelli noodles that it comes with. We had this amazing dish at the Hilltop Ao Nang. Highly recommended.

Bonus points for the spectacular panoramic view from the restaurant.

One of my absolute favorite curries is massaman and I think many would agree with me. While I do like my food extra spicy, massaman curry is mildly spicy but the flavor is just finger-licking. Can’t go wrong with succulent chicken and potatoes. We tried this one at Ruen Mai restaurant.

Seafood yumminess

This soft-shell fried crab at Hilltop Ao Nang is absolutely to die for. It’s too bad we had to share it because I would have finished two of these bad boys by myself. You don’t even need to put any sauce on it because there is surely a tangy-spicy flavor marinated within.

No beach trip is complete without some shrimp. There were so many different styles but this was one of the best – fried shrimp in red curry sauce, which we had at the Hilltop restaurant in Ao Nang.

I never thought I would try clams or seashells but I had to at Ruen Mai. This boiled signature Krabi clam with spicy seafood sauce is definitely an acquired taste. How do you eat one? You use a toothpick and poke the meat inside the shell and gently pull it out. Then dip in sauce and eat. Just one though, please.

Other stuff

If you were thinking what is different and should be eating in Krabi, then the stir-fried Liang leaf with egg is a must. I can’t describe how it tastes but believe me when I say, it is very good. We had this twice on our trip. Once at Baan Ma Yhing and then at Ruen Mai restaurant.

While this could be considered a seafood dish, I’m putting it here because you could easily have a vegetarian version of it. The focus is not the shrimp or even the egg but the green vegetables. This is a spicy Phukkud salad. Crunchy, savory and a little spicy, this salad is definitely a healthy dish worth trying. Where, you ask? Try it at Ruen Mai restaurant.
