Before we tell you about this lovely gem of a restaurant, we have to tell you how we heard about it in the first place.
So a friend of ours works/volunteers for a NGO in Bangkok – The Camillian Home for Children Living With Disabilities. They were innovatively and quite geniusly raising charity by selling F&B vouchers at only 1,050 Baht featuring some of Bangkok’s best restaurants and cafes. So being foodies and wanting to give back at the same time, we bought one pack. As we went through the list of vouchers, we noticed that all but one restaurant had validity for their promotions till Jan 31st, 2016 and that was Casa Azul – offering 50% off food. Their promotion was ending in just a few short days so we decided to quickly give it a try.
I didn’t know what Casa Azul was and had never heard of it before. I thought it was a cafe but Kanika told me that it’s a newly opened Mexican restaurant. That really peaked my interest since I’ve only tried 3 Mexican restaurants in Bangkok.
So we took the Bangkok Skytrain (BTS) to Ari and then a short tuk tuk ride (since it started pouring) inside Phahonyothin soi 7.
Ambiance
Aptly named, Casa Azul, which in Spanish means ‘blue house’, was literally a little blue house – almost a hole in the wall but in a very homely and cozy setting. This shop-house turned restaurant was surrounded by blue walls with colorful portraits and artwork. In the background you can hear soft but lively Spanish music playing that created a very fun, energetic yet easygoing ambiance.
The outside
Once we reached, we were greeted by a friendly, old Thai gentleman who showed us to our seats, showed the menu and suggested drinks.

Food & Drinks
We both ordered margaritas (150 Baht) each. Kanika had the mango version while I safely stuck with the classic. You can either go with frozen or on the rocks. The frozen margarita is perfect for summers as it was very refreshing with just the right amount of mango – almost like having a popsicle. The classic was also very delicious and fresh giving a light buzz with the first few sips. Perfectly created I’d say.
In addition to the standard drinks you get at Mexican restaurants, there is a wide range of craft beers that are slightly pricey (between 250 – 350 Baht for 33 cl bottles). There’s also cocktails and wines on offer here. On Fridays, ladies can enjoy free margaritas from 4-7 (oh you lucky ladies!)
Moving on to the food, Casa Azul has one of the best quesadillas we’ve ever tasted. We had the grilled chicken quesadillas (250 Baht), which had chunks of full flavored chicken combined with cheese, cilantro, onion and capsicum. We were on the verge of ordering seconds but decided against it.

Chips served with guacamole and pico de gallo
As sides we ordered the chips served with guacamole and pico de gallo. The chips were crispy and flavored well while the guac had the perfect combination of creaminess and sourness. The occasional chunks of avocado and tomatoes added an extra zing to the texture and flavor. This was a superb snack that you could dip into the guac and pico de gallo or with the the 6 sauces to add some flavor. The best and spiciest of them all was the aptly named, Hellfire because indeed it created hell in my mouth with just 2 drops.
Wow Factor
Overall, the food was delicious and came in good portion at inexpensive prices. Vegetarians rejoice because you also can enjoy this restaurant as each dish has a veg option. The margaritas are strong as I reckon 3 will set you good for the night. It’s worth a few more visits for an easy but cheap night out and we’ll definitely be taking friends here next time.
And guess what?? Coincidentally, we randomly met our friend, Yvonne Liang – the brains behind the charity voucher – that night! We spent about 20 minutes talking about the success of the voucher booklet and she thanked us for the support. I think we should be thanking her, which we did. Thanks Yvonne!
