Located in Sukhumvit 20 at the entrance of the newly-opened Akyra TAS Sukhumvit hotel is an all-day dining restaurant and cafe that is hoping to break ground in Bangkok’s massive restaurant market. Siam Soul Cafe is the latest addition to the city, offering International and Thai cuisine all day long from 6 in the morning to 10:30 at night.
We decided to check out since we love to eat and (almost) never miss an opportunity to try new places. Here’s what we thought.
Restaurant ambiance
When it comes to dining, it’s more than about food. The entire experience matters – from the entrance to the decor, lighting, seating, music, and service. All of it creates the ambiance and Siam Soul definitely had a bit of soul to it.
It’s not what you see. It’s about what you feel. And we felt like we were both tucked away from the chaos of Bangkok but still part of it.
I particularly liked the outside seating but since it was quite hot, we decided to sit inside.
Modern, comfortable and chic with a focus on minimalistic industrial design, it was easy to appreciate the overall restaurant concept. You could tell it was more than just another hotel restaurant with all its subtleties.
It was nice to see natural lighting peeking through the large glass-paned windows.
Saturday afternoons are for mimosas and brunch
While Siam Soul has an extensive menu of Thai and western dishes, we believe their highlight is the brunch and Thai high tea package. So we forego the basic Pad Thais or the generic curries and opted for their signature Akyra breakfast Tortilla and the afternoon tea set.
The breakfast tortilla included a generous serving of perfectly cooked scrambled eggs, lettuce, tomatoes, and bacon on top of a crispy tortilla.
Packaged in a bento box, the Thai tea set includes a serving of deep-fried spring rolls, chicken satay, prawns encased in egg film, cinnamon waffles, Thai tea tiramisu, and mango sticky rice. Obviously, it comes with your choice of tea or coffee. Priced at just 350++, it’s a great deal!
To go along with these dishes, a cocktail, beer or wine is a must. You can’t have a boozy brunch without it. While mimosas are a perfect match for any breakfast-lunch combo, we decided to go for one of their signature cocktail. The Thai Smile. A brilliant blend of Jack Daniel, Amaretto, orange juice, mango puree, and lime makes this cocktail a perfect, summery, refreshing drink.
To make Thai Smile completely Thai-inspired, it would have been nice if they had used a Thai spirit such as Mekhong or Sang Som instead.
Why dine here?
For the brunch hands down. It’s hard to find a good boozy brunch place in Bangkok. Most are in hotels and while so is this, it’s not a big hotel that makes you feel overwhelmed. Even though the restaurant is in the lobby and next to the entrance, it’s almost as if the restaurant is on its own.
The food is delicious and cocktails refreshingly sublime. Having spoken to the chef, we could tell she loves to cook for her guests and has put her heart into it.
7/10 for restaurant concept and ambiance – they could add a little more feeling to it with some music or special events.
9/10 for food and drinks
