The first time I was in Koh Chang, I mostly spent my time exploring the island or relaxing on the beaches. The second time it was for work but only for one night. Shortly after I took a third trip with some friends for a birthday. Naturally, we went to many bars and restaurants. However, on the second last day, we decided to go island hopping. That’s when we found a Koh Chang island snorkeling tour that would take us to 5 different islands nearby.
Yes, there are plenty of smaller islands near Koh Chang. A lot more than just Koh Kood or Koh Mak. Even I was a bit surprised.
Here’s a brief overview of our journey.
Koh Yak Lek
After about a VERYYYYYY bumpy 40-minute speedboat ride, we made our first stop at an island called Koh Yak Lek. It was actually a snorkeling spot. We weren’t allowed to actually set foot on the island itself as there are alot of corals were around here.
Swimming around, I discovered some pretty fascinating marine life such as sea anemone, colorful corals, and sea urchins. Schools of vibrant fish would brush past me but swiftly swim away as I would try to touch one.
It was a surreal experience. It had been quite some time since I was underwater.
Koh Mapring
Only a few of us decided to swim here. There wasn’t much to see.
The captain gave us a choice to either swim to the next island or get off from the speedboat. I opted to swim. It didn’t seem that far but eventually turned out to be quite challenging.
I had to take a few breaks, sometimes to adjust the life jacket or the snorkel. It would have been easier if I simply swam there without either.
Koh Rang – San Jhao Beach
This was our first island stop where we were able to step foot on.
As I swam closer to the beach, the water became clearer and started shifted colors from dark blue to aqua. It was like a swimming pool! Now I have to say this is one of the best beaches I have ever seen.
Are you ready? Warning. Lots of paradisaical pictures coming up.

Koh Rong / Ya Yai
According to Google Map, this spot is known as Koh Rong but the itinerary and our captain referred to it as Koh Ya Yai. So I’m as confused as you.
Quite possibly the best snorkeling spot on this entire trip. The water was a gorgeous green-blue shade and extremely clear. You could easily spot some marine life from the boat. I really wish I had a GoPro to capture the beauty down below.
Our captain said that he has encountered a whale shark couple of times around this area. How lucky! It would be a dream come true if I were to ever come across one.
Koh Rang – main pier
This was the last stop on our Koh Chang island snorkeling tour. Actually it wasn’t a new island. We were back on Koh Rang but on a different beach. We only realized this much later.
In fact, Koh Rang is quite big and has a few beaches.
You can find out more about this island on IamKohChang.com and its other beaches.
It wasn’t as nice as San Jao Beach but still beautiful. While the sand wasn’t white, the beach had its own character. Lots of shade and even some bungalows to stay in. I believe there is also a ranger station here.
What was most interesting was a cute little deer that we came across as soon as we stepped on the beach. It was amazing to see wildlife up close and personal. I even fed the little guy some leaves. My friend named him/her deery.
After some of us went swimming while the rest just relaxed on the sand, hearing the soft waves and birds chirping.
I walked around taking pictures. I really can’t sit still.
They say paradise is a state of being. Yes, that is true but, wow, this is PARADISE. To be part of and in awe of this majestic nature is a true gift. I felt very blessed to be here.
After about an hour, it was time to head back to Koh Chang. Oh, what a day!
What do you think of this Koh Chang island snorkeling tour? Do you think it is worth it? What was your favorite spot? Personally, I wish there was one less snorkeling spot in exchange for another beautiful beach.
All in all, though, an amazing trip with good company and a great guide team.
That looks amazing! Beautiful scenery. I went scallop diving once which was also my first snorkeling experience. I felt like I could have stayed down there forever except my foot started to cramp up so I had to resurface.
I love the idea of doing a 5 island snorkelling tour. It would certainly be a great preview of Koh Rong to tease me to go back with scuba gear. It would be awesome to be there when there were whale sharks in the area. That blue water is certainly calling to me as winter starts in Canada.
Such a great post. I’d like to try snorkeling on one of these paradise islands. I’d like to choose Koh Rang. The main pier looks fabulous!
The entire tour was great but yes Koh Rang is the best in terms of beach and relaxation.
The 5 Island Snorkeling Tour looks like a lot of fun! The chance to see the diverse ocean life would be amazing, and the beaches and clear water don’t look to bad either! Koh Rang looks like an amazing place to relax or go for a walk along the pier. Beautiful pictures!
Your Koh Chang snorkeling tour reminded me of my island hopping in Flores, Indonesia. The water is so beautiful and look at the color changes. It’s really amazing! San Jhao Beach is exceptionally beautiful. I’m sure you’re still dreaming about your snorkeling trip.
I actually love island hopping tours and if I can get to snorkel, then that’s perfect. I agree with you, the pictures of San Jhao Beach are paradisiacal! What a beautiful day trip this would make.
